NOX

The Shadow Weaver

The creatures of Aetherwood know Nox mostly through rumor and lore. Those who have crossed paths with the quiet, hooded figure often have difficulty explaining exactly what they saw. They speak instead about what they felt.

There is a stillness that seems to surround Nox. It is almost as though the universe itself becomes quiet when he approaches someone who is unsure. He does not seek conversation, but neither does he avoid it. He simply exists, moving through Aetherwood with quiet purpose before eventually disappearing once again into the Ether.

Nox has never been known to ask for attention, yet stories about him have traveled through Aetherwood from one generation to the next.

Perhaps silence is sometimes remembered longer than words.

Nox is rarely seen without the violet fog. It arrives without warning, settling heavily among the roots of ancient trees and weaving between stones, streams, and forgotten paths. It has no scent anyone has been able to describe, no chill that can be measured, and no pattern that can be predicted.

Some believe the fog follows Nox.

Others believe Nox follows the fog.

No one has ever settled the question, including Nox.

Those who remain long enough to observe the fog sometimes notice something else. As quietly as it arrived, the dense violet fog begins to soften. What first concealed the forest gradually thins into a delicate mist before disappearing altogether, leaving the forest quiet once again.

Whether the forest changes the fog, or the fog changes the forest, no one can say.

The residents of Aetherwood grow up hearing stories about Nox, including the reminder that not every mystery needs to be solved. Some mysteries can simply be respected. Whenever Nox is discussed, even the most curious residents seem willing to leave a few questions unanswered.

Perhaps that is part of the reason his stories have survived for so long.

The oldest tales tell of a hooded traveler whose footsteps leave no mark upon the forest floor. Some say Nox has wandered Aetherwood longer than memory itself. Others insist he arrived one autumn evening and simply never left.

Even the Great Oak has offered little help in determining which story is true.

Teddy once asked the Great Oak directly.

The old tree answered only with the gentle rustling of its leaves.

Whether that was an answer or simply the wind has been debated ever since.

The oldest memories of Nox speak almost as much about the violet fog as they do about the Shadow Weaver himself. In those distant stories, the fog was said to linger heavily, clinging to the earth long after dawn. Travelers avoided it. Birds flew around it. Even the streams seemed quieter whenever it settled among the trees.

Nox was occasionally glimpsed within it, although never for long.

Over many seasons, the stories began to change. No one remembers exactly when it happened, only that the heavy violet fog did not remain as it once had. Those who watched carefully began noticing that before disappearing, it would slowly become lighter and softer, sometimes seeming almost luminous.

Why this happens is another question Aetherwood has never answered.

Nox himself has never claimed a home within the forest, yet no one considers him a stranger. No map records the paths he travels, and those who have attempted to follow him beyond the violet fog have been unsuccessful. They eventually find themselves standing in quiet woods, usually with more questions than when they began.

So the residents of Aetherwood have learned to let Nox come and go in his own way.

Seasons pass. Festivals come and go. Children grow into elders and eventually tell the same stories they once heard when they were young.

Then, every so often, the forest becomes unusually still.

Someone notices the first ribbons of violet drifting silently between the trees.

No one calls out.

No one runs.

Someone simply smiles and whispers,

"Nox has returned."

No one greets Nox quite as they would an old friend, but neither is he feared as he may once have been. Over generations, he has become something different.

Nox has become a living legend within Aetherwood.

Long after the violet fog softens into mist and finally disappears among the trees, his stories remain.

As for which of those stories are true, Nox seems perfectly content to leave that for each of us to wonder.

And for those attending the Festival of Unity, there are whispers that the violet mist may make an appearance as a very special guest.
