Yomei
Keeper of Serenity · Mandarin Drake
At Jade Lotus Pond, there are moments when the water becomes so still that the sky seems to rest upon its surface.
Those are the moments Yomei treasures most.
Graceful, thoughtful, and deeply intuitive, Yomei is the Keeper of Serenity in Aetherwood. He does not hurry to fill silence, nor does he believe every question requires an immediate answer. More often, he listens, observes, and allows understanding to arrive in its own time.
It is not unusual for Yomei to pause in the middle of a conversation because a ripple has crossed the pond, a cloud has shifted overhead, or a flower has opened just enough to catch his attention.
Eventually, he will return to the conversation.
Usually with something worth hearing.
Born Beside Jade Lotus Pond
Yomei was born among the lotus blossoms and quiet waters of Jade Lotus Pond, a secluded sanctuary deep within Aetherwood.
From the moment he hatched, water fascinated him.
While the other young ducklings splashed among the reeds and chased insects along the shore, Yomei could often be found gazing into the pond. Reflections moved across its surface—the sky, the trees, passing creatures, sunlight, moonlight—and he became captivated by the way the water could reveal the world while changing its appearance with every ripple.
He sometimes watched for so long that he completely lost track of time.
The habit never entirely disappeared.
As Yomei grew, the elders of the pond recognized something else unusual about him. He listened with extraordinary care.
He noticed changes in the seasons, patterns in the clouds, subtle movements among the reeds, and the quiet shifts in expression that sometimes revealed what another creature had not yet found words to say.
Through observation, Yomei began to understand that much of life speaks softly.
One only has to become quiet enough to notice.
The Wisdom of the Pond
One evening, Yomei sat beside the pond beneath a sky filled with stars.
The moon appeared upon the water.
Then a ripple disturbed it.
The moon stretched, scattered, and slowly became whole again.
Yomei watched.
Nothing had happened to the moon itself. Only its reflection had changed.
The moment remained with him.
He began to understand reflection not simply as something seen upon water, but as a way of approaching life. What we see can change depending upon where we stand, what has disturbed the surface, and whether we allow enough time for the water to settle.
From then on, reflection became an important part of how Yomei understood himself and others.
He never demanded clarity.
He allowed room for it.
Keeper of Serenity
Creatures throughout Aetherwood eventually began finding their way to the base of the great waterfall to Clearwater Pond.
Some came seeking Yomei's guidance. Others arrived carrying worries they could not quite explain. A few simply needed somewhere quiet to sit.
Yomei welcomed them all.
He has a remarkable ability to recognize when someone is troubled, yet he rarely presses them to speak before they are ready. He offers companionship without judgment and listens without immediately trying to change what another is feeling.
Yomei understands that emotions have something to tell us.
Rather than pushing uncomfortable feelings away, he encourages others to notice them with curiosity and compassion. Understanding often begins there.
His appreciation for the smallest details of the natural world carries another quiet reminder: beauty does not have to announce itself.
Sometimes it is a lotus opening upon the pond.
A reflection beneath the moon.
A breeze moving through the reeds.
A friend sitting silently beside you.
Wonder is everywhere when we remember to notice it.
Beyond the Pond
As Yomei's curiosity carried him farther from Lotus Pond, his travels eventually brought him to the heart of Aetherwood.
There he discovered Clearwater Pond, a very different body of water from the quiet pond where he had grown up. Fed by Aetherwood's waterfall, Clearwater Pond was always moving. Ripples traveled across its surface, the falling water created its own steady rhythm, and reflections shifted almost as quickly as they appeared.
Yomei was fascinated.
For someone who had learned so much from still water, Clearwater Pond offered another perspective. Reflection did not always require perfect stillness. Sometimes clarity could be found while the world continued moving around you.
Yomei made Clearwater Pond his temporary home while staying in the heart of Aetherwood. From there, he ventured throughout the forest, meeting creatures whose experiences were very different from his own. Each carried a history, a perspective, and a way of understanding the world that could not be known simply by looking at them.
Yomei listened.
Those encounters deepened his compassion and strengthened his belief that understanding another begins by allowing their experience to belong to them.
Wherever his travels may eventually lead him, Lotus Pond remains the quiet water of his beginnings. But while Yomei is in Aetherwood, Clearwater Pond has become a place where an old understanding of serenity continues to grow in new ways.
At the Festival of Unity
During the Festival of Unity, Pond glimmers beneath the moonlight while music and celebration fill the surrounding forest.
Yomei remains close to the water.
He enjoys the celebration, but his presence offers something quieter within it: a place where excitement and stillness can exist together.
Those who wander toward the pond may find him watching the reflections upon its surface, listening to the distant music, or simply enjoying the moment exactly as it is.
Yomei does not ask anyone to leave the celebration behind.
He reminds them that even in the midst of music, laughter, movement, and magic, there is room to become still.
Because sometimes clarity does not arrive when we search harder.
Sometimes the water simply needs time to settle.
